Etymology

表六(ひょうろく) (hyōroku, “idiot, fool”) + 玉(だま) (dama, “spherical object suffix”). The first component supposedly derives from the way that a turtle will foolishly keep its six (六) limbs (head, four limbs, and tail) out in the open (表) even in the face of danger; the second component is added as a suffix by analogy with 悪玉(あくだま) (akudama, “bad character”) and 善玉(ぜんだま) (zendama, “good character”).[1]
