Borrowed from Classical Persian دوزخ‎ (dōzax), from Middle Persian 𐭣𐭥𐭱𐭧𐭥𐭩‎ (dušox), from earlier [Inscriptional Pahlavi needed] (dušahw⁠), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *dušHáhuš (literally “bad existence”). Compare Hindustani دوزخ‎ / दोज़ख़ (dozax).
