Inherited from Middle Bengali গুমট (gumoṭ) with medial vowel raising, from Old Bengali *গিমট (gimaṭa) with initial vowel backing, from Prakrit *𑀕𑀺𑀫𑁆𑀳𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*gimhaṭṭa), from 𑀕𑀺𑀫𑁆𑀳 (gimha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀝𑁆𑀝- (-ṭṭa-), from Sanskrit ग्रीष्म (grīṣma, “summer”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʷr̥Hšmás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷr̥h₂-smh₂ -ós (“heavy summer”). Doublet of গ্রীষ্ম (griśśõ).
