From Proto-Indo-European *(s)pHóy-nh₂-os, from *(s)poH(y)- (foam). Cognate with Lithuanian spáinė, Russian пе́на (péna), Latin pūmex (pumice), spuma (froth), Old English fām (whence English foam).
