Etymology
Of uncertain origin.
Hiersche derives the word from an unattested *कर्ष्ट (karṣṭa) / *कृष्ट (kṛṣṭa), with the sequence of sound changes being *कर्ष्ट (karṣṭa) > कट्ठ (kaṭṭha) > *काठ (kāṭha) > (via hyper-Sanskritism) Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value). He further derives this from Proto-Indo-European *kers- (“to cut off”), an enlargement of *(s)ker- (“to cut”).
Alternatively, possibly cognate with Ancient Greek κάστον (káston, “wood”).
Declension
Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value)
