Etymology
Of uncertain origin.
The retroflex d has to be assumed as the primary consonant; thus derivations from l-forms are invalid. Attempts to connect कड to कल (kala, “indistinct; mumbling”) are similarly unconvincing.
Burrow invokes Fortunatov's law and derives कड from an intermediate *कल्द (kalda), and connects this to Old Norse haltr (“lame”).
Alternatively, has been considered as a borrowing from Munda.
