From a variant of Aramaic סְלַק‎ (səlaq). The diminishing of /l/ is already viewed in Classical Syriac.

1. to ascend, go up

   ‏ܟܹܐ ܐܵܣܩܹܬ ܠܕܲܪ̈ܓ݂ܹܐ ܘܦܵܬܠܹܬ ܝܲܡܝܼܢܵܐܝܼܬ݂.‎‎ ― kē āsqēt l-darḡē w-pātlēt yamīnāˀīṯ. ― You go up the stairs and take a right.

   ‏ܡܣܲܠܩܵܢܵܐ ܟܹܐ ܐܵܣܹܩ ܗܲܠ ܡܸܕܝܵܪܵܐ ܚܡܝܼܫܵܝܵܐ.‎‎ ― msalqānā kē āsēq hal midyārā ḥmīšāyā. ― The lift ascends to the fifth floor.

2. to rise, increase

   ‏ܡܘܼܙܹ̈ܐ ܐ݇ܣܝܼܩܹ̈ܐ ܝܢܵܐ ܡ̣ܢ ܥܸܠܲܬ ܚܲܣܝܼܪܘܼܬܵܐ.‎‎ ― mūzē sīqē ìnā min ˁillat ḥasīrūtā. ― Bananas have gone up because of a shortage.

   ‏ܚܵܙܝܵܢܹ̈ܐ ܐ݇ܣܝܼܩ ܠܗܘܿܢ ܬܸܡܵܠ ܒܠܲܝܠܹܐ.‎‎ ― ḥāzyānē sīq lhōn timmāl b-laylē. ― The views went up last night.

3. to get in, board, embark into a vehicle

   ‏ܝܲܐܠܵܗ ܣܘܿܩܝ ܓܵܘ ܪܲܕܵܝܬܵܐ!‎‎ ― yallāh sōq gāw raddāytā! ― Hurry up and get into the car!

   ‏ܒܹܐ݇ܣܵܩܵܐ ܝܘܲܚ ܓܵܘ ܛܲܝܵܣܬܵܐ.‎‎ ― bēsāqā ìwaḥ gāw ṭayyāstā. ― We’re boarding the plane now.
