Etymology
From Middle Persian, possibly borrowed from Sanskrit सिद्धपथ (siddhapatha, “path of the Blessed”).
According to folk etymology, from سند (send) + باد (bâd), whence also the Arabic هِنْدِبَاد (hindibād). Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value) is a Middle Persian borrowing.
Akin to Old Armenian Սմբատ (Smbat), Ancient Greek Συντίπας (Suntípas) (Iranian borrowing via Classical Syriac?).
The sense "cognitive faculty" was coined by Azar Kayvan's cult (died early 17th century), according to Dehkhoda.
