Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܐܳܦܰܩܬܳܐ‎ (ʾāpaqtā), ܐܰܦܩܰܥܬܳܐ‎ (ʾap̄qaʿtā, “de-seeded cotton”) from ܦܩܰܥ‎ (pqaʿ, “to split, to reave, to crack”), compare the etymology of فَقُّوس‎ (faqqūs, “Armenian cucumber”).
