томбака

Erzya

Etymology

From *tomba + *-ka, possibly borrowed from Proto-Turkic [Term?] (compare Chuvash тăба (tăba, (whirl)pool), Tatar туба (tuba))[1] or from Proto-Baltic *duob- (compare Lithuanian dubùs (deep, hollow), dauba (hollow place)). The word has also been compared with Proto-Finno-Permic *tiwä (deep) (whence Finnish syvä, Eastern Mari тӱнӧ (tünö)), but this connection is considered unlikely.
