From Old East Slavic възпѣвати (vŭzpěvati), възпѣти (vŭzpěti), from Proto-Slavic *vъzpěvati, *vъzpěti, from Proto-Slavic root *pěti. Compare Polish śpiewać, Belarusian спява́ць (spjavácʹ).
