Etymology

Derived from Proto-Uralic *sala (“conceal, keep (sg) secret, steal; thief”). Compare Finnish sala (“secret”), salata (“to conceal, keep secret, cover up, hide”), Võro sala (“spy, thief”), Northern Sami suola, Eastern Mari шолы (šoly, “thief”).
