From Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Estonian pähkel, Finnish pähkinä, Votic pähtšene, Livonian pē’gõz, Veps pähkim, Ingrian päähkänä, Erzya пеште (pešťe), Moksha пяште (päšťe), Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, hazelnut bush) and possibly also Komi-Zyrian пашкан (paškan, rosehip).
