From Proto-Mordvinic *mertä, borrowed from early Indo-Iranian, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥tós (compare Persian مرد (mard, “man”)). Cognates include Moksha мирде (mirďe), Komi-Zyrian морт (mort).
