Calque of Latin viviparus, from живо́й (živój, “alive”) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ родя́щий (rodjáščij), present active imperfective participle of роди́ть (rodítʹ, “to give birth”). In modern Russian роди́ть (rodítʹ) is only used as a perfective verb and doesn't have the present tense.
