From Classical Mongolian ᠳᠡᠭᠦᠦ (dägüü), from Middle Mongol ᠲᠡᠺᠦ (täkü), from Proto-Mongolic *dexü. Cognate with Buryat дүү (düü), Kalmyk дү (dü), Daur ᡩ᠋ᡝ᠋ᠣ (deo), etc. Compare also Manchu ᡩ᠋ᡝ᠋ᠣ (deo).
