Etymology

Borrowed from German Haubitze, from Old Czech haufnicě, húfnicě (a short artillery piece designed to fire a heap of stones) (whence modern Czech houfnice), derived from húf, hauf (heap), itself a borrowing from Middle High German hūfe (whence German Haufen, see further etymology there).

First attested in 1703 (predating Polish haubica), short-lived variants include гоубица (1697) and гобитц (1700). Displaced 17th-c. Middle Russian гафуница (gafunica).
