Appears to be of a substrate/onomatopoeic origin, compare Bashkir бәр-бәр (bär-bär, “a call for sheep”).
Possibly from (para-)Iranic substratum, compare Persian بره (barre, “lamb”), Middle Persian [script needed] (bārān, “sheep, lamb”), from Proto-Indo-European *urh₁en- (“lamb”).
