From Old Church Slavonic багрити (bagriti, “to redden, to become scarlet-coloured”), from Old Church Slavonic багръ (bagrŭ, “purple”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₁- (“to heat up; bathe”). Cognates include English bake, German bähen (“to bake”) and Ancient Greek φώγω (phṓgō, “to roast”).
