From Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺa- (“to eat”), from Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺ (“food, meal”)[1].

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aša-, “to eat”)[2]; Kumyk ашамакъ (aşamaq, “to eat”); Karachay-Balkar ашаргъа (aşarğa, “to eat”); Yakut аһаа (ahaa, “to eat”), etc.
