Corruption of Ancient Greek Μακκαβαῖος (Makkabaîos, “Maccabee”), as this day is also the liturgical celebration of martyr of the Maccabees, through folk etymology, reanalyzed as мак (mak) + -о- (-o-) + ві́яти (víjaty).
