From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ŋa-j ~ ka. Cognate with Burmese ငါ (nga), Old Chinese 吾 (OC *ŋraː, *ŋaː), Tibetan ང (nga, “I”) and Sichuan Yi ꉢ (nga).
