Smileys were originally created in pure text such as :-) or :-( , and icons were created later, which are also called smileys or emoticons.

There are many different types of smileys:

: The happy smiley and sad smiley.

This is the most often used smiley.

Smileys are good to show expressions while texting, and also to show that you are just kidding and orjoking. They are already part of normal texting, and many people use them! Even older people express their feelings in smileys.
