Lord Rayleigh
John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, OM, PC, PRS (12 November 1842 – 30 June 1919) was an English scientist.
He lived from 1842 to 1919.
He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904. He won the prize for his work in learning new things about air.
In studying air he found a new gas called Argon.
He worked in many different areas of physics which is the science of matter and energy.
Strutt got the title Third Baron Rayleigh from his father. The name sounds like RAY lee.
King Edward VII honored Rayleigh with an award called the Order of Merit.
Rayleigh looked at the way very small pieces of matter (particles) scatter light waves around. This is called Rayleigh Scattering and tells why the sky is blue.
He also studied the way energy waves from earthquakes move through the Earth. These Rayleigh Waves are named after him.
