Aspasia was a woman of Ancient Greece, best known as the companion of the statesman Pericles.

Aspasia was born to a well to do family on Miletus. She left Miletus for Athens. She may have been a courtesan in her adopted city. She became famous in Athens as a brilliant conversationalist.

Her house was an intellectual center in Athens. It attracted the most prominent writers and thinkers, including the philosopher Socrates. She conducted her own school of philosophy. Aspasia died about 400 BC.
